Terrific Toyota twins: Spec-checking the Avanza and Veloz | Zigwheels

Don't call it an Avanza.

While the recently launched Veloz shares numerous bits and pieces with the 2022 Avanza, Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) insists that the new small SUV is a totally unique model from the MPV.

When you look closely, though, it seems that what TMP's doing is no marketing ploy — Toyota really did its best in creating the 2022 Veloz into a mold of its own.

Among the differences the 2022 Veloz has over its MPV counterpart is positioned front and center. Compared to the Avanza's slim lights and wide front grille that recalls the Vios' front end, the Veloz wears larger headlamps and a triangular grille placed higher up the fascia. Now, the Veloz's face looks like that of the Corolla Cross' or RAV4's.

Viewed from the side, the 2022 Veloz continues its SUV imaging with larger 17-inch alloy wheels, as well as the black over fenders that go around the bottom half of the car's body. That's something the Veloz units spec-ed for our Asian neighbors don't wear.

At the rear, Toyota has given the 2022 Veloz an LED light bar to further distinguish the SUV from the MPV. Rear bumper details and bold Veloz badging once again make this SUV unique.

It's also in the safety department where the SUV distinguishes itself. Its Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) arsenal includes a pre-collision system, 360-degree camera, automatic high beam, blind spot monitor, rear cross traffic alert (RCTA), pre-collision system, and lane departure warning.

All of these are on top of the 2022 Avanza's reversing camera and sensors. Both vehicles, meanwhile, share the RCTA, vehicle stability control, and six airbags.

Our game of spot-the-differences doesn't end there. Inside, the Veloz cabin adds white and gloss black trim pieces, ambient lighting, and semi-leather seats. In terms of features, the Veloz adds two more speakers for a total of six, automatic climate control, and an inch-larger infotainment screen at nine inches.

Now, what about those shared bits and pieces? The 2022 Avanza and Veloz share a 1.5-liter engine that generates 106hp and 138Nm of torque. Both vehicles use a CVT, and a new front-wheel drive layout that underpins a three-row, seven-seater cabin.

Fancy doing some car-camping? Well, the 2022 Avanza and Veloz are certainly up for it with their Long Sofa Mode rear seating configuration. In Long Sofa Mode, the second-row seatbacks fold back to meet the cushions of the third-row seats, creating a flat surface in which one can lay down or lounge on.

Speaking of flat surfaces, both vehicles' second- and third-row perches can fold and create an unobstructed cargo area to fit bits and bobs of various shapes and sizes.

And so, the Avanza and Veloz appear to be twins that share stylish, practical, and equipment-rich qualities. In what areas are these vehicles similar and different? Check out the spec sheets of the top of the line Avanza (1.5 G CVT) and Veloz (1.5 V CVT) to find out.
